Low Carbohydrate Diets for Life

Low carbohydrate diets or low carb diets are diet programs that focus on the restriction of carbohydrates. Generally used for weight control or for weight loss, the low carb diet is exists in many versions that range from moderate to very restrictive. The Atkins Diet and Body for Life are two of the leading low carb diet plans. The focus of the low carb diet program is to limit or restrict the intake of carbohydrates. Although some diet plans restrict the consumption of all carbohydrates, some plans focus on the glycemic index.

The Atkins diet is a low carb diet that restricts the intake of any and all carbohydrates. The goal of the Atkins diet is to place your body in a state of ketosis. Ketosis occurs when the body does not have carbohydrates to convert to energy. During this phase, the body burns fat for energy. The Atkins low carb diet supplemented with physical activity is a recipe for successful weight loss. Initially, carbohydrate intake is restricted to 20 grams or less of carbs for at least two weeks. Once the two weeks have passed, the dieter enters into ongoing weight loss where 'good' carbohydrates are slowly reintroduced such as fruits and whole grains.

The Body for Life low carbohydrate diet focuses on the glycemic index. Developed by Dr. David Jenkins in 1980, the glycemic index charts the quality of carbohydrates on a scale and assigns a glycemic number. Food that is high on the glycemic index is carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion. Examples of food high on the glycemic index are corn flakes, white bread, most desserts and sweets, and white rice. Examples of food low on the glycemic index are fruits, vegetables, and whole grain bread. The low glycemic index food will release glucose more slowly and steadily. The Body for Life does not place a zero restriction on carbohydrates but instead focuses on the eating of quality carbs.

The goal in both low carb diets is to replace high glycemic foods with those that are rich in fiber. By accomplishing this, dieters will achieve good weight loss results and optimal health.
